Washington, DC — The Democratic Party’s principles and vision allude to the values of equality and justice. It’s very name honors the universal value of democracy and it’s 2016 party platform refers to the absolute necessity of “protecting civil liberties and guaranteeing civil rights and voting rights, women’s rights and workers’ rights, LGBT rights…” Those are the same values that Iranian-Americans demand be made a priority of Iran policy.
Regrettably, drafts of the party’s 2020 Iran platform at this time refers only to the Islamic regime and ignores the Iranian people. As the Islamic Republic expands its campaign of crimes against humanity against the people of Iran and augments its campaign of international terrorism against America and our allies, Iranian-Americans demand that it be held to account.
The Islamic Republic’s crimes against humanity and its threats to American national security should not be a partisan issue. We urge the Democratic party to address these critical issues by standing by the people of Iran in their fight for equality, justice, and democracy.
Refusal to do so will not be accepted by the Iranian-American community.
