Since the inception of the Islamic Republic in 1979, there has been a cultural chasm between the clerical establishment and the general public in Iran. This year, that chasm was laid bare during Norooz celebrations across the country On March 21, more than 300 million people worldwide—including 91 million in Iran—celebrated Norooz. Ali Khamenei was not one of them.

He delivered a public speech and published a recorded message on the occasion. However, neither included any of the national, cultural symbols of Norooz. Notably, he did not even congratulate Iranians on the holiday.

This year, Norooz celebrations coincided with the lunar calendar mourning period for the death anniversary of Shia Imam Ali.

Unsurprisingly, religious mourning has dominated public messages from the clerical establishment.

In the first decade after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the regime tried to distance itself from Iran’s cultural heritage, which was consistently and publicly  celebrated by the Pahlavi Dynasty. The regime at points tried to even replace Norooz celebrations, prioritizing Islamic celebrations of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. However, public pressure has forced the state to acknowledge and allow celebration of Norooz.

Accentuating this dichotomy, in videos from Norooz celebrations across the country a popular trend ensued in which Iranians played or sang the pre-revolutionary “Ey Iran” anthem and chanted slogans in favor of the Pahlavi dynasty including, most prominently, the Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi.

One meme compared Khamenei’s Norooz message with that of Mickey Mouse. The American cartoon character had all Norooz symbols on display while the Ayatollah steered clear of any celebratory message or trappings.
