NUFDI Statement on 2023 Nobel Peace Prize

The people of Iran have struggled for freedom and democracy and a return to dignity and progress for more than four decades. In that movement, the first and foremost victims of the criminal Islamic Republic have been Iranian women.

Narges Mohammadi’s winning of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize should be viewed as a recognition of the suffering, sacrifice, and strength of the women of Iran. It honors Mahsa Amini, Fatemeh Sepehri, Armita Garavand, Nahid Shirpisheh, Soheila Hejab, Neda Agha Soltan, Zahra Kazemi, and so many others who suffered and continue to suffer under this criminal, gender apartheid regime.

These valiant Iranian women, particularly those who courageously advocate for freedom and democracy and against the entirety of this corrupt regime from “reformists” to “hardliners,” are worthy of every international accolade. Yet, beyond these honors, what they truly merit is a robust policy response from the international community – one that holds the Islamic Republic accountable and supports their national revolution and quest for a free Iran.

This prestigious award should galvanize the West to actively support the Iranian people’s aspirations to topple the Islamic Republic and usher in a secular democracy.
