NUFDI’s Statement on the Execution Spree in Iran

This weekend Yousef Mehrdad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare were murdered by the Islamic Republic for the so-called crime of “insulting Islam”. These young men, who were executed based on so-called confessions that their attorneys say were extracted by force, are just the most recent victims of the Islamic Republic’s war on the Iranian people and their freedom of expression.

In recent weeks, the regime in Iran has launched a killing spree. The regime’s recent increase in executions, however, cannot be seen as entirely unrelated to the indifference of many in the
West, including the Biden administration that refuses to hold the regime accountable.

The regime’s campaign of wanton violence against the Iranian people is in fact emboldened by a U.S. policy towards Iran that refuses to prioritize human rights, and recognize the people’s democratic aspirations.

Unless the Biden Administration changes course to stand with
the people of Iran and defend America’s values and interests by applying maximum pressure on the regime and maximum support of the Iranian people, it will bear moral responsibility for its inaction in the face of such state violence.

There was a time when USAdarFarsi and other U.S. Government accounts would strongly condemn those murdered for “insulting Islam.” Under the current administration, they have turned into accounts that‌ instead promote the hijab. The State Department should, in response to this travesty, announce that it is sanctioning the perpetrators of this abhorrent crime, that it is reshuffling its Iran team, and the White House should announce its support for the passage of H.R. 589 (the MAHSA Act) currently before the Congress with more than 100 Democratic and Republican
co-sponsors.

This assault on human dignity deserves outright condemnation by the civilIed world and requires swift punitive sanctions against the perpetrators of the state murder of Yousef and Sadrollah.
