Islamic Republic’s Presidential Candidates Selected

  • This week, candidates in the running to replace Ebrahim Raisi were selected.
  • Out of the 85 people who applied to run for president of the Islamic Republic, only six were approved and will be permitted to run.
  • All candidates are conservative, except for one “reformist” who has said that it is not the president’s job to introduce new policies, as the Supreme Leader’s policies are clear.

Fatemeh Sepehri Sentenced to Additional Time in Prison

  • Fatemeh Sepehri has long been a vocal critic of Khamenei’s regime, and as a result has spent years in and out of prison. Most recently, Fatemeh was arrested at the beginning of the 2022 revolution in Iran.
  • As she serves her sentence, Fatemeh has now been sentenced to an additional 18.5 years in prison on baseless charges relating to “national security”.
  • Two of her brothers are also facing multiple years in prison for insulting Khamenei and for propaganda activities against the regime.

Iran International Journalist Placed Under Police Protection

  •   Iran International reporter Mehran Abbasian has been placed under Swedish police protection and has been moved to a secure location after threats were made against his life.
  • Since 2022, journalists for Iran International have been consistently threatened, including when presenter Pouria Zeraati was stabbed outside his home in London earlier this year.
  • This comes just after the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that the Islamic Republic had been recruiting Swedish crime gangs to carry out terror plots abroad, as the regime continues to try to spread its violence and intimidation beyond Iran’s borders.
