The Islamic Republic is repainting its infamous mural, which depicts the U.S. flag with the slogans “Down with the U.S.A.” in English and “Death to America” written in Persian.
The mural was originally painted decades ago on the wall of the state-run National Organization of Educational Testing on Tehran’s Nejatollahi St (Geolocation: PC78+W8J).
The bottom of the mural includes a quote from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei which reads, “We will make no concessions to the U.S., not even for a split second.”
Khamenei made the comment in a December 1989 speech, only months after assuming power as Supreme Leader. He has stayed the course ever since.
The repainting of the mural comes amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Khamenei has again and again rejected “direct talks” with Washington, and his lieutenants have echoed the same message. He has also threatened “severe retaliation” if the United States strikes targets in Iran. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to strike Iran if the Islamic Republic doesn’t reach a new deal with Washington.
